A mi siempre me gustaba hacer experimentos en las clases de química en la secundaria porque no sabía que esperar de ellos. Para mi sorpresa, sucedió lo mismo cuando escuché por primera vez la banda Xperimento de Miami. No me esperaba esa mezcla de Cumbia, Reggae, Merengue, Ska, Salsa, Funk y otros elementos que me dio ganas de pararme y moverme al son de ritmos multiculturales. El disco “Second Floor” es uno que comienza bien y termina bien. A través del álbum se pueden apreciar distintos ritmos en distintos idiomas, haciendo que ninguna canción se parezca a otra y haciéndolo muy entretenido, tanto para bailar como para sentarse a escuchar.

La banda que denomina su música como “Latin Reggae Urban Soul” comenzó hace más de dos años uniendo músicos de Argentina, Puerto Rico, Venezuela y Colombia para así formar una mezcla interesante de ritmos latinos que solamente se puede dar en Miami. “Second Floor” es el primer álbum de la banda, el cual ya está disponible a través de iTunes.

A pesar de que los experimentos a veces pueden salir mal, parece que Xperimento es uno que salió bien. Está científicamente probado que su música es perfecta para la gozadera de día y de noche.

¡Feliz viernes! Hoy venimos desde Miami con el grupo Palo! y con la canción “Camina con los codos” que está contenida el el álbum “This is Afro-Cuban Funk“. La canción fue escrita por los integrantes de Palo! Steve Roitstein y Leslie Cartaya en colaboración con Roly Rivero, músico profesional que vive en Cuba con el cual el grupo colabora vía email. Por esta razón es que esta canción (al igual que las demás en el álbum) tiene una vibra de funk mezclado con sabor cubano.

La agrupación fue formada en el 2003 por el tecladista y productor Steve Roitstein, miamero que fue el director musical de Willy Chirino por varios años, en conjunto con el saxofonista venezolano Ed Calle y la cantante Leslie Cartaya, conguero Philbert Almenteros y timbalero Raymer Olalde, que llegaron a Miami desde Cuba hace varios años.

TROPICALISMO: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

With a foot in the Caribbean and another in the Pacific, Colombia is at the crossroads of the Americas. Its privileged geography is also a musical boon, as the confluence of African, indigenous, and European influences has produced one of the world’s greatest countries for live music – from cumbia to salsa to champeta and beyond. Based in Calí, Colombia since 2007, the UK-born Will Holland has been playing under the umbrella name Quantic for over 15 years as a producer, musician, and DJ. On Wednesday, October 12th, he will be at Fluid Nightclub for the Tropicalismo monthly to help Philly close out Hispanic Heritage Month.

Deemed “at the forefront of a new global sound” by Gilles Peterson of BBC Radio 1, Quantic has been evolving and involving various styles like funk & jazz to electronic & folk music through to Latin, reggae, dub & cumbia through his over ten-full length albums on Tru Thoughts. His latest is “The Best of Quantic) and it spans the breadth of his music. As Holland explains, “I try to make music that encourages people to explore outside of their usual listening circles and check scenes and genres they may otherwise never be exposed to.”

El nombre “Patafunk” es sinónimo de baile, amor, naturaleza y espiritualidad. El hecho de que ese nombre sea sinónimo de tantas cosas diferentes se refleja también en su música, la cual es una mezcla de distintos géneros como house, soul, tropical, reggae y funk, entre otros. La peculiar mezcla de la banda Patafunk es producto de sus raices venezolanas y su actual vida en Nueva York. Y por eso mismo es que la mezcla no se limita a solo la música… ¡La banda también mezcla idiomas en las canciones! ¡La voz de Patafunk canta en puro Spanglish!

La banda creada en el 2007 y actualmente radicada en Brooklyn, Nueva York está formada por el Dj/Multi-intrumentista Cem Patafunk y la Diseñadora Su Patafunk. Su primer álbum “Dubdelic”, lanzado en el 2008, llegó al #2 en la lista del “Record Report” en Venezuela con su sencillo “Surferston”. Otras canciones como “I wish, I want”, “Ok, LA” y “Hacenda’o” también tuvieron una excelente recepción por parte de la audiencia venezolana. Ese mismo año, la revista Rolling Stone Latinoamérica lo calificó como el mejor disco del 2008.

El dúo acaba de lanzar su segundo álbum titulado “Playa” a través de iTunes. En este álbum, Patafunk mezcla ritmos tropicales con elementos de música electrónica y funk,  logrando que todos los distintos sonidos convivan en perfecta armonía. El álbum cuenta con la participación especial de varios artistas, como Ferrari Snowday, Sr. Mendez, Martin Vejarano, Gerry Weil, Onechot, Nene Quintero, 2irie y Alex Pepe Marinero, entre otros.

Back from the West Coast! El Residente Presidente,  Juanderful!

After over a month long road trip through the West Coast, driving from LA up to Vancouver, BC and back down, Juanderful is back and really excited to be back on home turf. Had some awesome DJing pit stops in LA with DJ  Sloepoke, San Francisco with Don Bustamante, Roger Mas, and Kool Kyle, & Vancouver with Cherchez, Genie, and Oro 11. Ready to bring some of the west coast tropical funk!!!

Don Cerati, NYC: DJ, Producer, and Remixer, Don Cerati [Afro)(Santic/Vodou Fire] is an extremely eclectic man when it comes to life and music. He has been making a name of his own in the NYC DJ scene by keeping true to himself and his genuine and passionate love for music.

Don Cerati’s DJ sets consist of a rhythmic combination of House, Latin, Funk, Brazilian, Afrobeat, Disco, Reggae, World Lounge, Cumbia, Dub, Tropical Bass, and everything in between, to take you into a musical journey around the world and back.

He has shared the DJ booth with some of his musical heroes and favorite people like Nickodemus, Wiseacre, Nappy G, Sabo, $mall ¢hange, DRM, Eddie Plenty, to mention a few. He also has been special guest in a couple of the Turntables On The Hudson events. Has played local hot spots like Cielo, Water Taxi Beach, The Empire Hotel Lobby Bar, Bembe, and Grotto. He’s also the resident DJ at Corcho Wine Room where he holds down his weekly DC’s Grooves on Saturday nights. He’s now working on the release of his debut EP to be released soon…
