¡Feliz viernes! ¡Para este nuevo fin de semana traemos los beats orgánicos del Ritmo Machine! Esta es la nueva colaboración del percusionista de Cypress Hill, Eric Bobo y el DJ Latin Bitman. Es una unión que trasciende las fronteras trazadas por el hombre, uniendo al músico de Estados Unidos con el mix master de Chile y usando como influencias todo lo que está entre medio. Según Eric Bobo, la música que ellos crearon fue basada en “beats fuertes, pero a la misma vez muy melódicos,” inyectando ritmos de salsa, cumbia, brasileños y otros en su música. La canción “La Calle” cuenta con la participación de Sick Jacken y Ana Tijoux y está contenida en el álbum “Welcome to the Ritmo Machine” lanzado por Nacional Records. ¡Pulso Y Pa’ Lante!

A mi siempre me gustaba hacer experimentos en las clases de química en la secundaria porque no sabía que esperar de ellos. Para mi sorpresa, sucedió lo mismo cuando escuché por primera vez la banda Xperimento de Miami. No me esperaba esa mezcla de Cumbia, Reggae, Merengue, Ska, Salsa, Funk y otros elementos que me dio ganas de pararme y moverme al son de ritmos multiculturales. El disco “Second Floor” es uno que comienza bien y termina bien. A través del álbum se pueden apreciar distintos ritmos en distintos idiomas, haciendo que ninguna canción se parezca a otra y haciéndolo muy entretenido, tanto para bailar como para sentarse a escuchar.

La banda que denomina su música como “Latin Reggae Urban Soul” comenzó hace más de dos años uniendo músicos de Argentina, Puerto Rico, Venezuela y Colombia para así formar una mezcla interesante de ritmos latinos que solamente se puede dar en Miami. “Second Floor” es el primer álbum de la banda, el cual ya está disponible a través de iTunes.

A pesar de que los experimentos a veces pueden salir mal, parece que Xperimento es uno que salió bien. Está científicamente probado que su música es perfecta para la gozadera de día y de noche.

Bar Man! ¡Dos cervezas por favor! Así empieza lo que es para mi, la canción más destacada del nuevo EP “Pura Vida” del artista canadiense (Montréal),Boogat.

Imagínate en un bar, pero de lo más nuevos que se hacen pasar por viejos, no como algunos tugurios que existen (que también tienen mucho que ofrecerle al color de una ciudad.) Pues Boogat pertenece a la nueva escuela de artistas desarrollando su música a través de un sonido global. Ahí te encuentras, en medio del frío invernal de Montréal, con los sonidos calientes de Boogat. “Pura Vida“, un título adecuado para este EP, pues es pura vida lo que transpira cada sonido y cada letra, suficiente para derretir el hielo eterno de este pais norteamericano, suficiente para seducirte hacia la pista de baile. Esto es música para la disco con más de una dosis de talento invertido en el proceso de producción, pues resalta de entre tantos EPs y álbumes que dicen propagar este movimiento que tiene tantos nombres. Tropical Bass, Nu Cumbia, Nueva Cumbia, Global Bass….llámalo como quieras, Boogat, junto a los productores que lo acompañan en este nuevo EP, se luce como un maestro de este género global.

“Pura Vida”, su primer EP en español, fue lanzado a través de Masalacism Records en Montréal, Canadá y es definitivamente una celebración de la buena vida. Incluye 4 temas que retumban y te hacen mover lo que tienes y hasta lo que no tienes…

En el primer corte, “Montrealesa“, producida por el mismo, Boogat le hace un tributo cumbiero a la mujer de Montréal que me recuerda a la canción famosa cantada por Pastor López, “Las Caleñas“, que dice “Las caleñas son como las flores…”

“Dos Cervezas” y “El Hueso“, ambas producidas por el talentoso Poirier, seguramente te llevan en un viaje desde el bar hasta la pista de baile y de vuelta al bar con sus ritmos dislocados y los bajos entorpecedores. Esto si es la buena vida… ¡estilo canadiense!

“Hey“, producida por Nom de Plume, es en donde Boogat aprovecha el espacio y el ritmo para mostrarnos su lado poético y un poco bohemio cuando canta “…es tan difícil tocar la felicidad, si la ves por ahí, dile ¡Hey!”

¡Si cuatro temas no son suficientes, pues ten paciencia porque este EP solo prepara terreno para un álbum entero de gozadera al estilo Boogat! ¡No gasten mucho tiempo afuera porque lo que les espera adentro es pura vida! ¡Pulso y Pa’ lante!

Putumayo has gone through many transitions. It started as a handicraft shop in Manhattan that grew into a popular clothing line (it was even featured in a “Seinfeld” episode), to then become a record label known worldwide for their regional and genre-themed compilations. But Putumayo’s popularity didn’t only grow in record stores. The label Fort Knox Recordings presents the “Bestia” EP, the Empresarios follow-up release to their debut album, “Sabor Tropical“. Having spent the past few months touring and rocking shows nationwide, the Empresarios draw on their performance experience to create these four new floor rocking gems.  The styles range from salsa and cumbia to house.  Live instrumentation is incorporated throughout the tracks including guitars, flutes, piano, congas and more. The EP starts off with “Bailando” and “Bestia“, which are both built around infectious Latin house grooves peppered with percussion, horns and electronic elements. These two tracks are guaranteed to pack the dancefloor.  Following the frenzy of the first two tracks is the laid back, sweaty tropical vibe of “Cumbia Salvaje“, which takes a traditional cumbia straight into the 21st Century. Closing out the EP is “Sentimiento“, an instant classic in the nu-salsa style of their hit track “Sabor Tropical”, paying homage to Nuyorican and Fania influences.

The Empresarios kicked off 2011 with the release of their debut album, “Sabor Tropical”.  They went on to perform numerous shows coast to coast and made a big splash at SXSW 2011.  Fort Knox Recordings released two “Sabor Tropical” Remix EP’s that have been championed by top DJs worldwide.  And most recently the Empresarios’ track “Sabor Tropical” was licensed to EA Sport’s massive FIFA 2012 video game.  Needless to say the Empresarios have had an amazing year and are ready to take their game up a level.

TROPICALISMO: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

With a foot in the Caribbean and another in the Pacific, Colombia is at the crossroads of the Americas. Its privileged geography is also a musical boon, as the confluence of African, indigenous, and European influences has produced one of the world’s greatest countries for live music – from cumbia to salsa to champeta and beyond. Based in Calí, Colombia since 2007, the UK-born Will Holland has been playing under the umbrella name Quantic for over 15 years as a producer, musician, and DJ. On Wednesday, October 12th, he will be at Fluid Nightclub for the Tropicalismo monthly to help Philly close out Hispanic Heritage Month.

Deemed “at the forefront of a new global sound” by Gilles Peterson of BBC Radio 1, Quantic has been evolving and involving various styles like funk & jazz to electronic & folk music through to Latin, reggae, dub & cumbia through his over ten-full length albums on Tru Thoughts. His latest is “The Best of Quantic) and it spans the breadth of his music. As Holland explains, “I try to make music that encourages people to explore outside of their usual listening circles and check scenes and genres they may otherwise never be exposed to.”

Back to back tropical storms are just a prelude to the steamy sounds coming to Fluid Nightclub on Wednesday, September 14^th. In September 2010, Philly DJs Juanderful and Gregzinho launched Tropicalismo, a party to promote the music of Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean – both old-school rhythms and nu-skool riddims. They stitched together dusty salsa vinyl on Colombia’s Discos Fuentes with French Caribbean drumming on records rescued from Paris and ’70s Carnival samba recordings bartered for on the streets of Rio. As the night progressed, the analog switched to digital and Puerto Rican reggaetón mingled with Ghanaian hip-hop, dancehall switched from patois to español as it jumped from Jamaica to Panama, and Brazilian baile funk brushed up against South African kwaito and Angolan kuduro. The night garnered praise from Philly to Germany.

To set the tone, the crew called on Uproot Andy (NYC / Que Bajo), whose remixes amp up everything from Colombian cumbias and champetas to West African songcraft to Panamanian hip-hop. All the while, local percussionist Master Jay (Work It Out!) kept the conga flowing, whatever the tempo. Flash forward to September 2011: Master Jay is back on tap, along with Geko Jones (NYC / Dutty Artz, Que Bajo?!), the other half of the infamous Que Bajo crew, known for their Time Out NYC-approved Brooklyn-to-Bogotá dance floor domination, and co-founder of the forward-thinking Dutty Artz label. A self-described “Puerto-lombian,” Geko is just back from Colombia, no surprise, where he has taken his ethnomusicologist’s sensibility to bring back fresh influences on his genre-spanning mixes, recently highlighted by NPR’s Alt.Latino, and working on a documentary, Pico de Gallos, about the underground music scene in Colombia.

Meanwhile, over the last year Tropicalismo has hosted DJs from Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Miami, Montreal, and NYC. February’s #1 ranked Carnival edition blew the roof off with a Brazilian-Caribbean soundclash care of Alex Shaw (Philly / Alô Brasil) and Poirier (Montreal / Ninjatune). May’s release party for 8 Inches of Moombahton showcased the emerging genre with local DJs and producers Apt One and Skinny Friedman of the Philadelphiynz, Obeyah, and Uncle Jesse. Gregzinho has spent the better part of the year based in Brazil, where he has kept up on the latest in baile funk in Rio’s favelas, explored the changing musical and cultural dynamic of the Brazilian northeast, linked up with São Paulo’s underground graffiti, hip-hop, and dancehall scene, and rocked parties from Rio to Argentina. Juanderful has been el residente in the Illadelph and spent much of the summer on tour out west, where he linked up in Vancouver with Oro11, the head honcho of San Francisco’s Tormenta Tropical.

A hemisphere and a half under one roof with transatlantic riddims from the Afro-Latin-Caribbean universe, Tropicalismo embodies the multicultural spirit of Philadelphia and the increasingly sonorous sound of nuestra América.

This month Juanderful, Residente Presidente is hanging on the west coast while fam, and soon to be Philly folklore, Apt One and Lil Dave are digging away and tropicalizing their selection for this incredible evening.

There’s not much else I can add to the story of Mr. Apt One. Besides being an excellent DJ/producer, doing some incredible parties (The Ball, Nacho City, Hot Mess…) and bringing some great guests to the Philly area, the dude is a gentleman and a scholar and he just recently got hitched, so congratulate him please! Expect to hear some tropical sounds you’ve never heard before.

I can pretty much say the same exact thing about Señor Lil Dave. Hard working dude doing some great things in the Philly area and abound. He’s also producing some great sounds, check out his SoundCloud page. His events (The Boom Bap, Body Rock…) and guests invited to the area are top-notch. Rolling deep with the Ill Vibe crew and doing the Eavesdrop radio show as well. I can continue but you must know by now that this night is going to be nitty nasty, sweaty funky good times.
