Según el fundador y director artístico Roberto Carcassés, Interactivo es un proyecto de cooperación musical que ha unido a músicos de distintas tendencias dentro de la música cubana actual. PulsoBeat se sentó con el vocalista Francis del Rio y el guitarrista William Vivanco en Miami Beach para hablar sobre el interesante proyecto musical que lleva más de diez años de carrera dentro de la escena musical en Cuba y que se presentó por primera vez en Estados Unidos para cerrar con broche de oro la quinta edición del Global Cuba Fest. Recientemente, Interactivo lanzó el álbum “Cubanos por el Mundo,” el cual contiene el sencillo “Que no pare el Pare,” que demuestra la interesante fusión y experimentación que ofrece este colectivo.

Pulsobeat.com recently interviewed Chico Mann. An artist whose passion for music and its culture, has allowed him to revolutionize and create a style unlike any other.  Here’s a glimpse of what went on during the interview. Be ready because Chico Mann’s tour is on the move and coming to all of us very soon!

PulsoBeat (PB): Who is Chico Mann and how did the name develop:

ChicoMann (CM): Name comes from the movie “Wild Style”. It felt appropriate because as the first hip hop movie it included a lot of Latino influence, and I feel that Latinos are part of the genesis of hip hop. The redundancy of Chico and Mann can mean any man, and really worked on all these different levels, so I felt the name was perfect for me and what I represent.

PB: Hip hop has progressed so much, how do you think that has influenced everything you’ve done up until this time?

CM: I’ve loved hip-hop since I was a little kid, the whole culture, break dancing, the funk of the music, and I feel that musically I’m just channeling that little kid. As I got older I got into other kinds of music, and at some point i wasn’t really following hip-hop, but you know you cant escape it. I’ve been around it my whole life so it influences me in more ways than I know.

PB: You’re father was in the industry, why did he advise you to stay out of it and why did you choose otherwise?

CM: They’d been giving me music lessons since I was 7, and in the 70’s and 80’s the Latin music business was really corrupt, it was a dirty business so my father didn’t want me involved in that. I’ve met a lot of old timers who tell me now that my dad was too kind of a person to be in the business, its funny to hear that 25 years later.

I chose otherwise because I love music, my mother has been in songwriting and its all I’ve ever known, and once my dad died I found music as a vehicle to cope with growing up. By the time I became an adult it was the most familiar thing to me, put a melody to a feeling and express it. It’s a very natural thing.

PB: Why did you choose the sounds of 1970′s Afro-Beat, 1980′s Freestyle and Afro-Cuban music to incorporate into your style?

CM: It was a process of experimenting, and I got really involved in using drum machines, I was so deep into Afro-Beat that everything I heard I could turn into it. That’s where my head is, it is its own musical idiom so once you start speaking that language it just happens organically. After recording and making different tracks I could start hearing how freestyle is a natural extension of Latin influence. It’s all from the same tree so the thread is really easy to spy, once you see it, it becomes really obvious.

PB: Tell me about your first album, Manifesto I. Why you called it that and how it helped launch your career?

CM: It was the result of a bunch of recording experiments, the idea was to make an archival recording. I had no thought about how to present it live, but it got picked up by a Dutch label that wanted to release it, so I went with it. I called it Manifesto because I was just playing with sounds and I had this idea that I would start with this simple premise and I come from a song writing background so it really was about a spontaneous composition.
I use to agonize over song form lyrics and when I was able to abandon that I had all this freedom that I was never able to have before so I just threw it into these projects. The parameters were simple, but they had to come from Afro-Beat. I was having so much fun that before I knew it I had breezed through I don’t know how many tracks, and the vision that I had became more clear as I familiarized myself with freestyle and new avenues.

PB: Based on your tattoos and the artwork in your projects, how does the Mayan culture influence you in your life and in your music?

CM: My grandmother was from Guatemala, and in high school I became concerned with exploring my ancestral origin when I discovered that she was Mayan. I started exploring native religion and culture and got myself more familiarized with it. My roots in that land made me feel really connected to everything about it.
In college I began to feel the connection with my ancestors, and so the pyramid on the cover comes from integrating the ancient and the future, it’s a good representation that the ancient and the future are one.
The live show now incorporates a color scheme and vibe to suggest and attract forces, and I use those forces to deliver a message.

PB: What are some of the latest projects that you’re getting into? Musical or otherwise?

CM: I’ve been focusing on the live shows lately so I don’t really know, people send me tracks to write to and I haven’t really gotten to a lot of them. I’m doing collabo’s, which come out in June, so aside from that there’s the occasional AntiBalas gigs, but mainly focusing on Chico Mann.

PB: How do you feel social media has impacted you as an artist and where would you be today if you didn’t have that?

CM: You have to be in the digital domain, social media is great because you can interact with your fans. I try to stay connected with people.
The dark side is that familiarity breathes content. I don’t need everyone to know everything I’m doing, I try not to put personal things on there. I try to keep it positive, and bring positive light to the world through my music, so anything that isn’t in line with that I don’t really share.
People forget to filter what they say, and everything has an impact. As an artist people look to us for direction and inspiration, so you have to be aware of what you say. It’s a slippery slope, which has to be handled with a lot of care.

PB: Do you plan on touring in South America, specifically Colombia in the future?

CM: I would love to; it’s such a great music scene. Now that I’m doing this show it’ll be a lot easier to be presented with the opportunity. This year I really want to do all the intensive touring in the fall so in the winter I can finish the album I’m working on. My fingers are crossed for South America, maybe even Australia, Brazil, and Europe.

PB: What can people expect from this tour you are on now?

CM: I don’t know how to verbalize that… I can tell you from my perspective what I’m exploring, I have all this technology that allows me to play my music in ways that I didn’t even know I could. Combinations of musical ideas and motifs that I didn’t think went together, but throughout my songwriting they work. I’m trying to create a musical landscape.
I want people to let go of the day and just have an experience. In this age of digital media people don’t really buy music anymore but there’s a great demand for the performance, so I’m trying to create a musical experience that transcends. Its all exploration, I don’t always know where its going to go, but that’s the fun part about it.

Feliz Viernes mi gente! Pues hoy le queremos presentar solo un pedacito del talento musical que se nos pego en nuestro ultimo viaje a San Francisco, California. Santero nos transporta a la religión y el ritual de la Santería , pero en su forma mas pura y honesta. Lo espiritual se mezcla con lo urbano, los cantos se confunden con sus rimas. “Agua del Rio” es el primer sencillo de su segundo disco, El Hijo de Obatala, y es un buen aperitivo a lo que puedes encontrar en los 11 temas que hacen parte del disco. El plato fuerte vendrá pronto, osea que graben en sus mentes la imagen de Santero y su rito urbano porque pronto volverá a nuestras paginas. Pulso y Pa’ lante!

Hay muchos canales de radio que lo ofrecen, pero en este mes tienen una variedad grande de musica navideña en español llamado “Navidad.” Este canal  ofrece Salsa, Mambo, Musica Tipica y canciones Tradicionales.  Porque esta noche mama no quiere escuchar rock alternativo.

Suenalo

In the neon jungle of South Florida’s nightlife, where dusky bars and moonlit beaches intertwine, Suénalo has the natives dancing. Afro-Cuban, Latin, R&B, rock and hip-hop fuse effortlessly—it’s the sounds of distant continents coming into their own distinctive, premium blend—the soundtrack of the melting-pot culture that is Miami.

Created in 2002 in the vibrant neighborhood of Little Havana, Suénalo has won legions of loyal fans and Best Local Latin Rock Band honors from the Miami New Times. Suénalo has performed at important festivals such as the Latin Funk Festival in Miami and New York, Calle Ocho, Ashefest (North Carolina), and Langerado. In addition, they’ve shared the stage with Afrobeat heavyweights Antibalas, and Latin-Grammy nominees Bossacucanova and Locos Por Juana.

Suénalo keeps a busy schedule performing at the premier venues in South Florida, including Jazid, Transit Lounge, Tobacco Road, and Circa 28 in Miami, the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth, and City Limits in Delray. Suénalo has released one live album, 2004’s Collages, and one studio album, self-titled Suénalo, released in 2006 to great acclaim. The band just recently released a second live album on November 28, 2009.

Los Hollywood (CA)

In 2007 Los Hollywood were born when Heidy (Vocals), Marcos (Guitar/Bass) and Gustavo (Drums) decided to join forces and talent to search for a fresh new concept with hopes of finding a new musical horizon. The sound of Los Hollywood has influences based on british rock with out forgetting their hispanic roots.

On January of 2008 Los Hollywood entered the recording studio to record their debut album under the production of Cuevo Perez and indie label Carrusel Records. During this short time Los Hollywood have managed to capture the attention of both the public and media. In June 2008 they won the first battle of the bands that was sponsored by Myspace Latino, this in turn gave them the chance to be one of five bands to be sponsored nationwide by Myspace Latino, it also gave them the opportunity to share the stage with Ximena Sariñana who was nominated for a  Grammy in 2009 for best new latin alternative artist.

In March of 2009 Los Hollywood released their debut album, launched the video of their single “No Te Aguites” and did a promotional tour throughout Mexico and the US.

Vamos mi gente!! Nos habíamos demorado, pero ya de regreso con otra selección de canciones para que disfruten por un buen rato. Estas canciones vienen de la mano de alguien muy cercano. He buscado la oportunidad para compartir esto con ustedes y es que mi hermano es un DJ reconocido en San Francisco, DJ Don Bustamante.

Desde el año 2000 Don Bustamante ha estado compartiendo su gusto musical variado y mas rumbero con su gente de San Francisco. Empezó su trayectoria en un lugar renombrado llamado Tunnel Top y, de boca en boca, se ha vuelto como el lugar preferido para ir a bailar los martes. Mas recientemente empezó una noche llamada “Tropicana” en el Madrone Lounge, buscando nuevo talento y nuevas bandas especializándose en música latina. Además, ha traído su talento a los eventos sociales e internacionales de Latinos A Morir. Pueden ver su perfil AQUI…

Su camino empezó a través de la Salsa Colombiana y se fue expandiendo, mezclando un poco de todo. Cumbia, Merengue, Son, y ultimamente… Reggaeton, Batucada, Latin House, y lo Latino Alternativo. Creemos que este reggaesito es lo suficientemente claro en lo que quiere transmitir como para sentarnos a hablar del tema. Este rapero y medico cubano nos trae un poco de fuego de palabras y es solo el  comienzo de la rumba con este ritmo relajante. Preparense!!

Seguimos adelante con la fiesta con La Colectiva y su cumbia colombiana. La Colectiva son todos latinos de distintos países pero todos radicados en California. Esta cumbia nos transporta a la costa de Colombia donde los esclavos bailaban para olvidar y dejar atrás los dolores del destierro. Cuuuummmbia!!

3. “La Palestina” Gente De Zona

Reggaeton Cubano!! Habrá controversia que en las paginas de PulsoBeat haya reggaeton? Pero no se niega que nos pone a bailar. Pa’ lante con la Gente De Zona.

6.“Que no me prendan las luces” Jowell y Randy ft. Tito El Bambino

Y seguimos con la controversia, Jowell y Randy desde Puerto Rico con su reggaeton que esta rompiendo barreras internacionales. También incluye una apariencia de uno de los duros del reggaeton, Tito El Bambino. El sandungueo comenzo!!

7. “La Toalla” Rokabanda

Quienes no se acuerdan de Rokabanda y Kinito Mendez? Claro que no faltaba

8. “Controlate” Adalberto Alvarez y Su Son

Que mas para descansar un poco el ritmo del baile que un buen son cubano? El Caballero del Son es un maestro en poner a la gente a gozar con este genero musical. Pero ten cuidado…Controlate!!

9. “Perreo Puro” Franco El Gorila

Simplemente, el titulo lo dice todo, un reggaeton de ritmo clasico. Franco, con la ayuda de Wisin y Yandel, ha llegado muy lejos en este genero. Era rockero y ahora reggaetonero, usando su lírica para destruir a su competencia.

10. “Por Allá Por Donde Vivo” Ñejo y Dálmata

Borinquen!! Aquí tenemos otro reggaeton con saborsito a cumbia. Tra, tra, tra!!! Ñejo y Dálmata, sacaron un álbum con el titulo de “Broke & Famous” en el 2007. El dúo sigue adelante trabajando duro en este genero, esperen mucho mas de estos muchachos.

11. “Mi Salsa Se Respeta” Ng2

Salsita para mi gente…Este dúo llega con mucha historia bajo la manga. Uno, hijo de uno de los integrantes de El Gran Combo, y los dos antes integraban la orquesta de Victor Manuelle. Aquí te hacen bailar mientras traen un mensaje positivo de unión, manteniendo vivas las raizes fuertes de la salsa clásica. Sabroso!!

Eso si, terminamos con una fuerte!! Vico C, el original de este genero que solo le sobra talento no se quedo atrás con esta tampoco. -No hay mucha información sobre Righi & Dan por el Internet, pero parece ser que son de Italia. Eso si, la canción se te pega con esa voz femenina y sensual que te repite el titulo de la canción hasta no poder sacártelo de la cabeza.

3. “Babarabatiri”(club mix) Mark Simmons

-El famoso DJ Mark Simmons nos trae una especie de “mambo electrónico” con esta mezcla rumbera y urbana que usa “samples” de algún mambo viejo. Bueno, por lo menos acá en PulsoBeat así lo denominamos.

4. “Beso en la boca”(Dub Mix) Alvaro Guerra & Kilian Dominguez Ft.Maskinen

-No pudimos encontrar nada sobre esta canción, y esperamos que esto no sea la misma historia para las otras canciones. Así que juzguen ustedes mismos si les gusta o no. Muy interesante el rap en portugués porque se parece mucho al favela rap de Brasil, es una mezcla muy buena de diferentes elementos.

5. “IC19″ (Deathface-Remix) Buraka Som Sistema

-Esta es una de nuestras favoritas en la lista variada de ThinkDifferent. Buraka Som Sistema nos viene desde Portugal con una fusión de música africana, electrónica, y con bajos muy graves que se sienten en los varios cambios que da la canción. 6. “Con Alegria”(Solo More Cowbell Remix) DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto

-Las próximas dos canciones son de los mismos DJs y ya verán que tienen elementos muy parecidos. Nos parece que la próxima canción es mejor que esta, pero un elemento que nos encanta de “Con Alegria” es el grito, un detalle muy pequeño pero importante.

7. “Push In The Bush”(Main Mix) DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto

-Esta tambien la podemos poner en la lista de favoritas. Que ritmo tan pegajoso, no se puede quedar uno quieto cuando ya la cancion se abre del todo. “Push In The Bush” te repite y te lo vuelve a repetir hasta volverse parte del baile loco que mueven sus pies. Esta si es un viaje!

8. “Samba Death Squad” (feat. Ricardo Ribeiro) Guns N Bombs

-Otra cancion con aires de Brasil funk y llena de energia. Guns N Bombs nos llegan desde Los Angeles a traernos esta mezcla de lo urbano con unos cuantos sintetizadores locos.

9. “Jumakoka” Bazuko Digital

-Es una cumbia super loca y electro, echa por unos colombianos igual de locos.  Parece ser que tienen a Colombia enredada en los dedos de la produccion porque este tema parece ser parte del nuevo movimiento de Digital Cumbia/Tropical Bass que se esta dando mundialmente.

10.“Oye”(Dub) Greenwood Rhythm Coalition

-Un poco de lo cubano y lo clasico con esta remezcla que igual nos trae elementos muy latentes en la escena independiente urbana de hoy en dia. Escuche los bajos sintetizados y sientalos retumbar en tu cabeza. Una remezcla fiestera para terminar la seleccion.
