The soft strains of música popular brasileira (MPB) are fine for making breakfast in the morning as I tune into MPB FM, nothing too harsh before my café com leite. On the flip side, the overwhelming bass of a baile funk is all bluster, no subtlety,
brash and exuberant and over the top, perfect for a bleary-eyed all nighter. But somewhere in the vast wellspring of Brazilian music there must be a middle ground – complex but not abrasive, sonorous but not soft. I found some version of that
platonic ideal on March 25. Nearby Lapa was in its usual Friday night full swing, and on the side street that is home to the Teatro Rival there was a baile black underway – a crowd of slightly older Afro-Brazilians grooving to the sounds of ’90s hip-hop and RnB (Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop” was on full blast when I arrived).

Slipping into the underground theater was a strange portal back to the kind of bobo
spots like World Café Live where I saw international music acts in Philadelphia.
Thankfully, the Brazilian crowd cut loose more than your average gringo audience
and thrashed around with joyful abandon as Orchestra Santa Massa reinterpreted
the traditional sounds of northeastern Brazil at their first show in seven years.
The artful mix of buoyant brass (trombone + trumpet), skillful violin, hauntingly beautiful male and female vocals that seemed to reach back centuries, and a judicious but not heavy-handed layer of samples and effects by ringleader (maestro?) DJ Dolores was indeed enough to renew my faith in Brazilian music.

DJ Dolores is a veteran of Recife’s manguebit movement, which in the late ’90s
began mixing the folk music of Pernambuco (the state of which Recife is the capital)
with rock instrumentation and electronic manipulation. Sometimes shoddy,
oftentimes revolutionary, manguebit has ebbed and flowed over the last decade.
But Dolores remains a mainstay of musical innovation, and has resurrected Santa
Massa at least for a tour, if not for another album. Equally adept as a DJ, he kept
the offbeat crowd – from a Bangalafumenga (a 50,000+ Carnival bloco) drummer
to a dedicated hula-hooper – on the dance floor well after curtain call, including
some nice cumbia cuts that I have yet to hear in Rio. Perhaps unconsciously, he was
rightly calling attention to yet another Latin American music with a storied tradition
that has been tweaked and tuned-up in the 21st century.

The mythic Carnaval of Rio de Janeiro entered with full force on Friday, March 4, though a bit wetter than usual thanks to the águas de março (Tom Jobim wasn’t making it up when he wrote that driftingly beautiful samba in 1972).  I am waiting out the rain after a sopping afternoon and evening slogging around Santa Teresa with the Bloco de Carmelitas, an irreverent homage — like the best of Carnaval blocos, the street bands that cavort around different neighborhoods, leading behind them a costumed and drunken crowd of revelers — to the Carmelite nuns who have a convent on top of the hillside neighborhood.  An estimated 3 million, spread across 424 blocos, will party in the streets, with names like Suvaco do Cristo (Christ’s armpit, because they parade in the neighborhood directly below the statue of Christ the Redeemer), Que Merda É Essa? (What is this shit?), and Xupa Mas Não Baba (Suck but don’t slobber).  In the mean time, then, for those who are in Rio, or wish they were, here are some brief highlights for those looking for alternative sounds to the traditional samba enredo (the routines performed by samba schools during their parade spectacular) and marchinha (brass and drum led numbers for blocos, repeated ad infinitum):

• Saturday, March 5: Jamaican Carnival, a soundclash between Bangarang Sound System (Rio) and Jurassic Sound System (São Paulo), playing only early roots reggae, ska, rocksteady, and even calypso and mento, and at a cheap R$ 5.

• Sunday, March 6: Baile Black, for those who want a little swing and groove to their samba, will be playing sambalanço (think Jorge Ben) courtesy of Irmãos do Quilombo (Brothers of the Maroons).  A bit steeper at R$ 60.

• Monday, March 7: Bloco AfroReggae returns to the streets of Arpoador at 3 pm with the theme of Gladiators.  You’ll be hearing those drums for at least a few miles away.

• Monday, March 7 and Tuesday, March 8: 2nd Annual Rio Sound System Festival will gather sound systems from across Brazil for a two-day Carnival spectacular, outdoors along the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon.  Highlights include local favorites Digitaldubs and the Rio-São Paulo hybrid Dubatak.  Sound system culture is definitely lacking in Rio‘s Carnaval, which skews toward live percussion and brass, or bad recordings projected on questionable sound trucks.  Let’s hope the 2nd annual is only the second of many.

• Tuesday, March into the wee hours of Wednesday, March 9: The last float of the last school of the last day of Carnaval will feature none other than tropicália legend Caetano Veloso, who will be saluted in the routine by Paraíso de Tuiuti, a samba school in the B league (two rungs below the top dogs of the Grupo Especial, who parade on Sunday and Monday).  He has agreed to parade with them, and thus close out Carnaval, which might just be what Tuiuti needs to conquer a top spot and make it into the Grupo A next year.

• Sunday, March 13: And you thought Carnival was over!  The gargantuan Monobloco, whose Transformer-esque logo is an apt description of their ability to be vastly more than the sum of their parts, has already outgrown its 50,000-strong parade along the beachfront and moved to Rio’s central avenue, Presidente Vargas.  Using the typical drums of a samba school, they play tunes from across the Brazilian music sphere.

Rio-based Maga Bo has sent out his official remix of everyone’s summer 2010 favorite, Bomba Estereo‘s ‘Fuego.’ With nary a month to go until Carnival madness strikes everywhere from Brazil to Barbados to Bogotá, the punched-up drums and dubbed out vocals should be a nice change of pace from March’s impending samba & soca fury.

While the Northern Hemisphere has gone louco in the last few years for parties centered around nu whirld music / global ghettotech / world music 2.0, or today’s nom du jour, tropical bass, it’s been the Global South (& its diaspora) supplying most of the beats.  Such is the case with Rio de Janeiro, which kickstarted the craze in many ways when funk carioca began swirling everywhere from MIA to an ill-fated Kevin Federline outing.  Even if funk is far from the Internet darling that it was in 2005, I can assure you that they are still going strong in the favelas of Rio, as my last few weekends of bleary-eyed dawns at bailes funk attests.

On the much humbler Tuesday night, however, a trio of Rio DJs with a nod toward their city’s musical export and similar sounds from around the world put together Dancing Cheetah.  Chico Dub, Pedro Seiler, and João Brasil have been throwing Dancing Cheetah on and off for almost two years at different spots around Rio, and 2011 sees them at Casa da Matriz, a beautifully restored imperial-era house in the Botafogo neighborhood.  Last week, the residents traded off downstairs — from João Brasil’s funk remixes to Chico Dub’s finger on the pulse of today’s global urban beats — while guests Maga Bo and Lucas Santtana took turns upstairs.  Bo is fresh off a U.S. tour and Lucas was also in town to DJ at Rio Fashion Week.

The next Dancing Cheetah is on Tuesday, January 25 at Casa da Matriz in Rio de Janeiro.  I caught up with Chico Dub before the party to ask him a few questions –

1.  Para quem não conhece a festa, pode resumir Dancing Cheetah em 10 palavras ou menos?
(For those not familiar with the party, can you summarize Dancing Cheetah in 10 words or less?)

Ritmos tropicais e eletrônicos produzidos nas periferias globais da América Latina, Caribe, África e um pouco de Ásia.

(Tropical rhythms and electronic beats from the outskirts of America Latin, the Caribbean, Africa, and a little bit of Asia.)

2.  Na verdade, de onde vem o nome da festa?
(Where does the name come from, really?)

A nossa mascote (ou símbolo) é um mashup da macaca do Tarzan com o animal Cheetah (guepardo)! E ela gosta (muito) de dançar!
(Our mascot is a mashup between Tarzan’s monkey and the cheetah.  She really likes to dance!)

Sempre trabalhamos a festa em temporadas ou datas especiais. Foi a fórmula que encontramos para que o público do Rio de Janeiro, sempre interessado em modismos, não se cansasse da festa. Hoje em dia, o João Brasil mora em Londres, então a festa se resume a mim e ao Pedro Seiler e a participação de convidados. Claro que o João toca com a gente sempre que visita o Brasil.

Nossos melhores convidados foram Frikstailers, El Remolón, Poirier, Villa Diamante e Bomba Estereo.

Na verdade, nossa inspiração musical vem de todas as festas e blogs de global guettotech que surgiram e que vem surgindo ultimamente. A primeira inspiração foram os argentinos do ZZK, depois vieram Generation Bass, Ghetto Bassquake e as festas do Secousse, etc. Acredito que está acontecendo no mundo inteiro toda uma “tropicalização sonora” e a Dancing Cheetah faz parte desse movimento aqui no Brasil. Depois da Cheetah, surgiram inclusive outras festas com essa característica por aqui, como a Baile Tropical (Belém do Pará) e a Boom Boom (São Paulo).

A influência visual na nossa parte estética é muito menor, apesar de gostar enormemente de toda a parte gráfica do ZZK. Eles são fantásticos no visual estético também.

(In truth, our musical inspiration comes from all the global ghettotech parties and blogs that have come about recently.  Our first inspiration was the Argentine outfit ZZK, them came Generation Bass, Ghetto Bassquake, the Secousse parties, etc.  I believe that throughout the world there is an ongoing “sonic tropicalization” and Dancing Cheetah is party of this movement here in Brasil.  Other than Cheetah, there are other parties in Brasil with the same style, including Baile Tropical (Belém do Pará) and Boom Boom (São Paulo).

5.  É assim, a próxima pergunta lógica: Citei três festas “tropicais” dos Estados Unidos — onde agora tem neive pra caramba e nenhuma palmeira — mas vocês fazem Dancing Cheetah dentro de uma cidade tropical (um verdadeiro país tropical segundo Jorge Ben), e a sede de uma das músicas urbanas periféricas mundiais (nu-whirld music / global guettotech / world music 2.0), o funk carioca.  Esse fato faz uma diferênca no estilo, contuédo, ou sentimento da sua festa?
(And thus, the next logical question: I cited three “tropical” parties in the U.S. — where it’s snowing like crazy and there isn’t a palm tree in sight — but you guys do Dancing Cheetah in a tropical city (a full-on tropical country according to the Jorge Ben lyric), and the home base of one of the global urban bass styles, funk carioca.  Does this fact make any different in the style, content, or feeling of your party?)

Pra te dar uma resposta completa, eu precisava conhecer de perto as festas européias e americanas de global guettotech, já que a sua pergunta tem um tom de comparação. Mas acredito que nosso estilo é um pouco menos pesado, menos “tech”, digamos, que as festas gringas. Com certeza somos bastante tropicais em nosso estilo! As músicas mais techno, mais pesadas, não pegam tão bem nas pistas do Rio. Uma música como “Babylon”, do Congorock, por exemplo, precisa ser tocada na hora certa, no momento certo. Caso contrário, vai mandar todo mundo embora para casa! Não me entenda mal, eu adoro coisas assim, mas você precisa alternar cumbias, tecnobregas, reggaetons, ou mesmo tribal guaracheros, antes de tocar o lado mais pesado, mais heavy metal, do guettotech.

(To really answer this one fully, I would have to actually have been to some of the American and Europe global ghettotech parties, since the question is comparative.  But I believe our style is a little less heavy, a little less “tech,” you could say, than the foreign parties.  For sure our style is plenty tropical!  The heavier, more techno style beats don’t catch as well on the dancefloors in Rio.  For example, a track like “Babylon,” by Congorock, needs to be played at the right time.  Otherwise, everyone is going to split the club!  Don’t get me wrong, I love that stuff, but you need to work in cumbia, technobrega, reggaeton, or even tribal guarachero, before playing the heavier side, the more heavy metal side, of ghettotech.)

Sim, estamos pensando em fazer uma festa especial em março, com um convidado de peso. Mas precisamos fugir do Carnaval, porque a concorrência é pesada! Nosso plano é fazer algo mais para o fim do mês!

Hay muchos canales de radio que lo ofrecen, pero en este mes tienen una variedad grande de musica navideña en español llamado “Navidad.” Este canal  ofrece Salsa, Mambo, Musica Tipica y canciones Tradicionales.  Porque esta noche mama no quiere escuchar rock alternativo.

-Dominicana viviendo en Nueva York que esta firmada al sello de Diplo, Mad Decent.  Aquí nos trae el renacimiento del merengue, un ritmo bravo y cadencioso con sabores muy electrónicos y graves. Me hace volver de nuevo a los días de….Kinito Mendez!!

-No hay mucha información sobre Righi & Dan por el Internet, pero parece ser que son de Italia. Eso si, la canción se te pega con esa voz femenina y sensual que te repite el titulo de la canción hasta no poder sacártelo de la cabeza.

3. “Babarabatiri”(club mix) Mark Simmons

-El famoso DJ Mark Simmons nos trae una especie de “mambo electrónico” con esta mezcla rumbera y urbana que usa “samples” de algún mambo viejo. Bueno, por lo menos acá en PulsoBeat así lo denominamos.

4. “Beso en la boca”(Dub Mix) Alvaro Guerra & Kilian Dominguez Ft.Maskinen

-No pudimos encontrar nada sobre esta canción, y esperamos que esto no sea la misma historia para las otras canciones. Así que juzguen ustedes mismos si les gusta o no. Muy interesante el rap en portugués porque se parece mucho al favela rap de Brasil, es una mezcla muy buena de diferentes elementos.

5. “IC19″ (Deathface-Remix) Buraka Som Sistema

-Esta es una de nuestras favoritas en la lista variada de ThinkDifferent. Buraka Som Sistema nos viene desde Portugal con una fusión de música africana, electrónica, y con bajos muy graves que se sienten en los varios cambios que da la canción. 6. “Con Alegria”(Solo More Cowbell Remix) DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto

-Las próximas dos canciones son de los mismos DJs y ya verán que tienen elementos muy parecidos. Nos parece que la próxima canción es mejor que esta, pero un elemento que nos encanta de “Con Alegria” es el grito, un detalle muy pequeño pero importante.

7. “Push In The Bush”(Main Mix) DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto

-Esta tambien la podemos poner en la lista de favoritas. Que ritmo tan pegajoso, no se puede quedar uno quieto cuando ya la cancion se abre del todo. “Push In The Bush” te repite y te lo vuelve a repetir hasta volverse parte del baile loco que mueven sus pies. Esta si es un viaje!

8. “Samba Death Squad” (feat. Ricardo Ribeiro) Guns N Bombs

-Otra cancion con aires de Brasil funk y llena de energia. Guns N Bombs nos llegan desde Los Angeles a traernos esta mezcla de lo urbano con unos cuantos sintetizadores locos.

-Es una cumbia super loca y electro, echa por unos colombianos igual de locos.  Parece ser que tienen a Colombia enredada en los dedos de la produccion porque este tema parece ser parte del nuevo movimiento de Digital Cumbia/Tropical Bass que se esta dando mundialmente.
