On event day they will orchestrate an “island festival” of tents that will feature new products, special drinks, foods, art, and more. A cornucopia of music will provide a feast of multicultural delights as world beat music takes center stage at the Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival on Saturday November 19, 2011 in Miami. A melodic smorgasbord featuring a musical genre for every taste – including reggae, Jamaican, Latin American, Kompa, Caribbean, rock ‘n roll, and more – will highlight this year’s concert.

In addition to a special tribute to the life of Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley and 50 years of Wailers music, this year’s Bayside Rocks will feature world music headliners The Original Wailers. Also hitting the stage are a unique group of artists whose musical brilliance is eclipsed only by its message of love and hope.

“I carefully selected this lineup because every artist has devoted his life to spreading a message that is consistent with my purpose,” said ROCKAZ MVMT president and CEO Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks. “We are all striving to change the world for the better by empowering people to make a positive difference through the universal language of music.”

According to artist Warrior King, “As a Rastafarian you just don’t sing music, you sing music with a purpose and a mission. To the four corners of the Earth I carry my music, and the message of love, to all people of all races.”

Cultura Profética

Cultura Profetica is a Puerto Rican reggae band with lyrics that center mostly on socio-political and ecological issues. Pato Banton sometimes invites his fans to join him in a prayer circle after the show and is committed to helping people “stay positive and never give in.”

Connis Vanterpool is a brilliantly talented musician who has worked with scores of international artists but is most proud of his involvement with the volunteer work he has done in the community, providing free music workshops at various elementary and secondary schools. Tabou Combo’s vocalist and main songwriter Fanfan said, “We want people to dance and forget their sorrows.” And while there is no doubt that Tabou’s music is made for dancing, it also features lyrics that focus on social issues of the day.

TROPICALISMO: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

With a foot in the Caribbean and another in the Pacific, Colombia is at the crossroads of the Americas. Its privileged geography is also a musical boon, as the confluence of African, indigenous, and European influences has produced one of the world’s greatest countries for live music – from cumbia to salsa to champeta and beyond. Based in Calí, Colombia since 2007, the UK-born Will Holland has been playing under the umbrella name Quantic for over 15 years as a producer, musician, and DJ. On Wednesday, October 12th, he will be at Fluid Nightclub for the Tropicalismo monthly to help Philly close out Hispanic Heritage Month.

Deemed “at the forefront of a new global sound” by Gilles Peterson of BBC Radio 1, Quantic has been evolving and involving various styles like funk & jazz to electronic & folk music through to Latin, reggae, dub & cumbia through his over ten-full length albums on Tru Thoughts. His latest is “The Best of Quantic) and it spans the breadth of his music. As Holland explains, “I try to make music that encourages people to explore outside of their usual listening circles and check scenes and genres they may otherwise never be exposed to.”

This month Juanderful, Residente Presidente is hanging on the west coast while fam, and soon to be Philly folklore, Apt One and Lil Dave are digging away and tropicalizing their selection for this incredible evening.

There’s not much else I can add to the story of Mr. Apt One. Besides being an excellent DJ/producer, doing some incredible parties (The Ball, Nacho City, Hot Mess…) and bringing some great guests to the Philly area, the dude is a gentleman and a scholar and he just recently got hitched, so congratulate him please! Expect to hear some tropical sounds you’ve never heard before.

I can pretty much say the same exact thing about Señor Lil Dave. Hard working dude doing some great things in the Philly area and abound. He’s also producing some great sounds, check out his SoundCloud page. His events (The Boom Bap, Body Rock…) and guests invited to the area are top-notch. Rolling deep with the Ill Vibe crew and doing the Eavesdrop radio show as well. I can continue but you must know by now that this night is going to be nitty nasty, sweaty funky good times. TROPICALISMO is back this week with a !!SOUNDCLASH!! edition! This is what Wikipedia has to say about soundclash: “A Sound clash is a musical competition where crew members from opposing reggae sound systems pit their skills against each other. Sound clashes take place in a variety of venues, both indoors and outdoors. Primarily featuring reggae (or dancehall) music, the object is to beat or “kill” their competitors.”

This Sound clash is between TROPICALISMO and World Town.  World Town is a crew in the city (Philly) doing similar tings to Tropicalismo.  Also pretty new to the scene, starting  at the beginning of this year. World Town are Ben Arsenal and Femstar.  Ben Arsenal has been rocking the Philly scene with his global house sounds.  He brings some influence from the time that he spent living in Brazil.  Femstar is of Nigerian descent and he’s been doing it up around the city  as well with his world sound.  Obviously bringing all that funkiness that Africa has to offer.

Juanderful, residente presidente, will be bringing that Colombian, Caribbean funk to mash it up some more. Come out this Thursday June 16th! RSVP below!!
