Santero nos transporta a la religión y el ritual de la Santería , pero en su forma mas pura y honesta. Lo espiritual se mezcla con lo urbano, los cantos se confunden con sus rimas. “Agua del Rio” es el primer sencillo de su segundo disco, El Hijo de Obatala, y es un buen aperitivo a lo que puedes encontrar en los 11 temas que hacen parte del disco. Stereo. 77 (Alejandro Ramirez) is a DJ, Producer, Crate Digger and Radio Host born in 1977 in Puerto Rico who moved to Central Florida in the mid 80s.

He began his DJ career in 1998 lining up multiple residencies throughout the Central Florida region and opening for such acts as Ben Mono, Joey Beats, Ancient Astronauts, DJ Sabo, KidGusto and many more. As a DJ, Stereo. 77 is by no means a traditionalist! His DJ sets are a melting pot of multi-genre flavors soaked in Caribbean spices with a heavy dose of dance floor ready Funky Breaks!

In 2004 he started Filtered Sunshine Radio on WPRK 91.5 FM(Central Florida) Rollins College Radio, a two hour weekly program that airs every Monday evening from 11pm-1am EST, featuring rare grooves, future frequencies and everything in between.

In early 2009, Stereo. 77 signed with Research Deluxe Recordings where he will see his first solo production, The Jibaro Beat EP, released in early summer 2010. The Jibaro Beat EP is a 5 track collection of Classic Salsa, Cumbia and Latin Funk inspired grooves, referred to by Stereo. 77 as “Lo- Fi Latin Funk.”

What can we say but to first start out by giving a huge thanks to Jeff Guerra and Robin Finley at The Arepa, Medellin’s English Magazine. Without these guys, PulsoBeat’s presence at Unconvention Medellin would have been impossible.  We reached out to them after we received confirmation from Unconvention that we were invited as press to cover the event; that gave us little less than a month to come up with a game plan. Since none of us at PulsoBeat were able to personally make it out to the event at the end of May, we decided to see if The Arepa wanted to represent PulsoBeat at Unconvention. Personally, we think these guys are great! Even though they had their own thing going on for the event, they were still gracious enough to lend us a hand and return with a great article.

If you love what we do here at PulsoBeat, you’d be crazy not to follow The Arepa and everything that they’re doing. These guys are pioneers in Medellin, Colombia, a city that is in the process of a great cultural makeover. They cover the independent/underground scene in Medellin, thats growing stronger and healthier than anybody could ever imagine, by putting out an amazing bi-monthly digital and printed magazine. They host their own English language radio show called Prime Cuts Radio,which is broadcast from the University of Antioquia on 101.9FM every Saturday at 9pm in Medellin.  Add to all of this the fact that they do all their coverage and material in English in a city that is just beginning to culturally embrace foreigners. Un-Convention Medellin just concluded on May 21, and the independent music industry conference was another unqualified success in the ongoing cultural makeover currently underway in Colombia’s second largest city. Founded in Manchester, England, this was the 8^th version of Un-Convention, and the first held in the Americas. Through free interactive workshops, conferences and forums, the 3-day event aims to provide alternative, independent options to would-be music industry professionals in some of the world’s fledgling creative outposts.

Medellin’s selection dates back a year ago, when Un-Convention founder Ruth Daniel met Colombian music entrepreneur Martín Giraldo during a visit to the city. In addition to noting its exploding music scene, the pair discussed Medellin’s similarity to Manchester in its current attempt to transition from an industrial to cultural capital. They immediately concluded the time was right, and began working to make it happen.

Though Un-Convention is not genre-specific, electronica, hip hop and experimental cumbia were strongly represented throughout the Medellin event. The latter two in particular are worthy of note; hip hop for instance has an established tradition of documenting urban life through powerfully delivered lyrics, and for many local artists this is a perfect vehicle for creatively working through Medellin’s recent violent past. While access to and quality of education is clearly improving in the barrios, poverty and a resulting lack of production tools has hindered the scene’s development. Here, then, is where Un-Convention did some of its best and presumably longest-lasting work.

Looking for new ways to advance a traditional Colombian rhythm, the so-called “Nueva Cumbia” movement is a laboratory for some of Un-Convention’s future-focused principles. Unlike recent Latin/electronica “fusion” projects featuring

tango and samba, Nueva Cumbia is taking an existing form in an organically

new direction as opposed to fusing its melodic elements with house or techno beats. Local artists Frente Cumbiero and Cero 39 are flying the Colombian flag in this genre, standing tall alongside the scene’s other luminaries in Argentina and Mexico.

Un-Convention’s panel members were every bit as advertised – insightful, innovative, and unfailingly generous from start to finish. It was an enormous gift having them here, and a powerful statement that Medellin is ready to participate in the global marketplace.

Quiero compartir con ustedes un pedacito de mi viaje a Medellin este año pasado en el mes de Octubre. Como es música en lo que nos enfocamos acá en PulsoBeat, pues es música lo que les voy a mostrar. El viaje lo hice con el plan de asistir al Festival Internacional Altavoz, que el año pasado se llevo a cabo la sexta versión. Pero, como con todos los planes hay imprevistos, acá les mostrare solo un poco del talento nacional e internacional que participo.

El Festival Internacional Altavoz se hace cada año mas o menos en el mes de Octubre y son tres días llenos de buena música, a veces lluvia, y la buena vibra de la gente de la ciudad y los visitantes. Para este evento, el apoyo viene desde adentro: La Alcaldía de Medellín, la Secretaría de Cultura Ciudadana y Metrojuventud. Durante los tres días se puede escuchar todo tipo de géneros de música, desde el Heavy Metal, el HipHop, la Electronica, el Rock y todo lo demás que se te puede ocurrir. A través del festival promueven la cultura, la tolerancia y el respeto. Este año se pudo ver en vivo por television o Internet presentado por TeleMedellin.

Les cuento que fue una meta cumplida para mi asistir a este festival y fue cumplida con mucha satisfacción y agrado. Me parece que todavía queda mucho espacio para crecer y algunos detalles para mejorar, pero eso siempre es bueno. Han crecido bastante y lo seguirán haciendo porque los encargados, el talento y el publico tiene muchisimo para aportar al Festival Altavoz. Los invito a estar pendientes del festival de este mismo año y no solo participar en un movimiento cultural muy bacano; también tendrán la oportunidad de conocer una ciudad que, para mi, es de las mas bellas del mundo en todo el sentido de la palabra. Aunque no pude asistir al primer día del festival y perdí todos los vídeos grabados del tercer día, aquí les presento una pequeña compilacion del segundo día:
