Hace unos días tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistar a Ramón Pérez Prieto, integrante y uno de los productores de Novalima. El colectivo de música afro-peruana suena diferente a las demás propuestas de música folclórica por los pequeños toques de sintetizadores, guitarra eléctrica y otros elementos electrónicos que fusionan de una forma sorpresivamente placentera con los elementos tradicionales de la música peruana. Y es por esto que han llamado la atención del público dentro y fuera de Perú. En esta entrevista, el tecladista de la banda nos habla sobre la música que hacen, sobre el nuevo disco “Karimba,” y sobre su nuevo hogar: la disquera ESL Music, manejada por los integrantes de Thievery Corporation.

With a foot in the Caribbean and another in the Pacific, Colombia is at the crossroads of the Americas. Its privileged geography is also a musical boon, as the confluence of African, indigenous, and European influences has produced one of the world’s greatest countries for live music – from cumbia to salsa to champeta and beyond. Based in Calí, Colombia since 2007, the UK-born Will Holland has been playing under the umbrella name Quantic for over 15 years as a producer, musician, and DJ. On Wednesday, October 12th, he will be at Fluid Nightclub for the Tropicalismo monthly to help Philly close out Hispanic Heritage Month.

Deemed “at the forefront of a new global sound” by Gilles Peterson of BBC Radio 1, Quantic has been evolving and involving various styles like funk & jazz to electronic & folk music through to Latin, reggae, dub & cumbia through his over ten-full length albums on Tru Thoughts. His latest is “The Best of Quantic) and it spans the breadth of his music. As Holland explains, “I try to make music that encourages people to explore outside of their usual listening circles and check scenes and genres they may otherwise never be exposed to.”

Pernett’s “folkclor progresivo” (as he also calls his music) pretty much sounds like what we imagine traditional Colombian

music will sound like in 2111: a psychedelic, electro hybrid of Afro-Colombian percussion and rhythms with funk, techno, pop and hip hop. Quantic and Pernett embody the musical spirit of TROPICALISMO, Philly’s Afro-Latin-Caribbean monthly blending old-school rhythms with nu-skool riddims. Resident DJ Juanderful, himself of Colombian descent, will be proudly pulling out his old Discos Fuentes’ vinyl as he sets the tone for a raucous night of claves, trumpets, and lots of drums.

Descubrimos esta banda hace unos días y quedamos contagiados con su mezcla de raices afro-colombianas con ritmos urbanos… Definitivamente es música pa’ bailar. Ahora mismo viven en Medellín pero llevan su música con ellos a donde sea que vayan. Este video fue filmado entre Chocó y Medellín, mostrando la mezcla cultural que alimenta la música de Explosión Negra. LANZALLAMAS MONOFÓNICA will be laying down their rhythmic groove at Miami’s hotspot, PAX Performing Arts eXchange, April 29 @ 10pm.

This cultural group consists of a unique sound and intriguing vibe that always has fans jamming and dancing the night away. The members of Lanzallamas strive to “celebrate the diversity and brotherhood of World Music and Art in the hopes to encourage World Peace.”

This seven-piece ensemble has grown straight from the roots of Miami and mixed their own personal style with world music, giving them a very broad spectrum of influence, to say the least.

Previously sharing the stage with artists like Cultura Profetica, Arturo Sandoval, and Rebirth Brass Band; there’s no doubt these musicians will put on a show well worth experiencing!

La música es parte esencial de la costa caribeña colombiana. Al vivir allí es imposible escapar del contagio de la cumbia y otros ritmos como la champeta, el porro y el vallenato. En medio de este revoltijo musical, en el cual se encuentra Barranquilla, es que creció Pernett, y al mezclar toda la música folclórica colombiana con su fascinación por lo electrónico es que nace su sonido: folclore progresivo.

Su carrera comenzó en el 2002 cuando empezó a elaborar su primer trabajo discográfico. En ese proceso también formó parte de Sidestepper, llevando la música a lugares como Estados Unidos, México y Europa.

Luego de tres trabajos discográficos, Pernett lanza su última producción titulada “El Mago”, producida en Cali, Colombia, donde reside actualmente. En este álbum el “cumbiambero” vuelve con su sonido vanguardista de música colombiana, experimentando con nuevos elementos pero siempre manteniendo los ritmos y sonidos que lo caracterizan, trayendo la música folclórica colombiana al siglo 21. Este año participó en grandes festivales de música en Estados Unidos como el WMC en Miami y SXSW en Austin, poniendo al público a bailar y a rogar por más con su “Kmbia Continental”, música de Colombia con un margen universal.
