TROPICALISMO: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

With a foot in the Caribbean and another in the Pacific, Colombia is at the crossroads of the Americas. Its privileged geography is also a musical boon, as the confluence of African, indigenous, and European influences has produced one of the world’s greatest countries for live music – from cumbia to salsa to champeta and beyond. Based in Calí, Colombia since 2007, the UK-born Will Holland has been playing under the umbrella name Quantic for over 15 years as a producer, musician, and DJ. On Wednesday, October 12th, he will be at Fluid Nightclub for the Tropicalismo monthly to help Philly close out Hispanic Heritage Month.

Deemed “at the forefront of a new global sound” by Gilles Peterson of BBC Radio 1, Quantic has been evolving and involving various styles like funk & jazz to electronic & folk music through to Latin, reggae, dub & cumbia through his over ten-full length albums on Tru Thoughts. His latest is “The Best of Quantic) and it spans the breadth of his music. As Holland explains, “I try to make music that encourages people to explore outside of their usual listening circles and check scenes and genres they may otherwise never be exposed to.”

Pernett’s “folkclor progresivo” (as he also calls his music) pretty much sounds like what we imagine traditional Colombian

music will sound like in 2111: a psychedelic, electro hybrid of Afro-Colombian percussion and rhythms with funk, techno, pop and hip hop. Quantic and Pernett embody the musical spirit of TROPICALISMO, Philly’s Afro-Latin-Caribbean monthly blending old-school rhythms with nu-skool riddims. Resident DJ Juanderful, himself of Colombian descent, will be proudly pulling out his old Discos Fuentes’ vinyl as he sets the tone for a raucous night of claves, trumpets, and lots of drums.

Q-Burns Abstract Message is by far one of America’s most enigmatic dance music producers and DJs. He thrives on blurring the boundary between eclectic experimenter and populist ass-shaker, bouncing effortlessly between styles that include house, downtempo, and even pop without ever being tied to any one in particular. Whether globetrotting as a DJ, co-running the Eighth Dimension Records label, remixing artists like Rabbit in the Moon, Fila Brazillia and Youssou N’Dour, or recording his own original productions, Q-Burns is all about the coaxing the maximum soul out of the machine. FADERKEY is quickly becoming one of Central Florida‘s most exciting (and perhaps) only Latin Electronica acts. Digging deep into their Latin roots with a Descarga style presentation, on thefly remixing, sampling and original productions infused with live instrumentation, wired and filtered via guitar effect pedals and synthesizers. This month Juanderful, Residente Presidente is hanging on the west coast while fam, and soon to be Philly folklore, Apt One and Lil Dave are digging away and tropicalizing their selection for this incredible evening.

There’s not much else I can add to the story of Mr. Apt One. Besides being an excellent DJ/producer, doing some incredible parties (The Ball, Nacho City, Hot Mess…) and bringing some great guests to the Philly area, the dude is a gentleman and a scholar and he just recently got hitched, so congratulate him please! Expect to hear some tropical sounds you’ve never heard before.

I can pretty much say the same exact thing about Señor Lil Dave. Hard working dude doing some great things in the Philly area and abound. He’s also producing some great sounds, check out his SoundCloud page. His events (The Boom Bap, Body Rock…) and guests invited to the area are top-notch. Rolling deep with the Ill Vibe crew and doing the Eavesdrop radio show as well. I can continue but you must know by now that this night is going to be nitty nasty, sweaty funky good times. We’ll see you at PAX (Performing Arts eXchange), this Saturday May 14, to experience Xperimento!! This bilingual, multicultural band that blends a variety of world sounds, will be performing their music like you’ve never seen it before. Xperimento‘s line up includes a horn section, percussion, drums, electric guitar, bass and a multifaceted singer.

PAX has showcased a lot of big named acts recently, and are happy to be adding Xperimento to their repertoire! These musicians have jammed with artists like Prince and Jon Secada, to name a few and are already receiving rave reviews from media nationwide.Their  members represent Puerto Rico, Argentina, Venezuela and Peru, mixing traditional sounds with the music of the future; this band brings the past back with a sophisticated touch. Get ready to take a trip with Spam Allstars and their “electronic descarga” at the Performing Arts eXchange (PAX)! Friday, May 6th @ 10pm!! PAX is a coffee art house and performing cultural arts center in Miami, where guests can unwind and enjoy the sounds of local and international acts. This night in particular, will consist of dancing and complete mayhem, so don’t miss out!

By blending electronic elements with a combination of latin, funk, hip hop and dub these musicians really know how to set the mood. Their indescribable sound attracts many types of people from all over the US. Spam Allstars have been performing in cities like New York City, Gainesville, Miami, Atlanta, and New Orleans to name a few, since the late 90’s.
