Las pasadas Navidades fui a Puerto Rico a visitar a mi familia y amigos. Una de esas tardes, una amiga me introdujo a Indigo, una banda que ya yo conocía pero por otro nombre, Los Convertibles. Al enterarme, indagué al respecto y encontré que lanzaron un álbum más temprano en el 2011.

Un poco sobre Indigo:
Hace uno o dos años atrás la banda Los Convertibles fue firmada por la editora Sony/ATV y grabaron algunas canciones en el estudio de Draco Rosa (Phantom Vox Studios en Los Ángeles, CA) para luego grabar un video musical de la canción “Y Yo También.” Luego de una gran recepción por parte de la escena musical puertorriqueña, la banda tomó residencia por dos meses en un estudio de grabación en el centro montañoso de Puerto Rico para grabar un LP de 13 canciones. Así fue que Los Convertibles se convirtió (valga la redundancia) en Indigo.

El resultado me pareció espectacular. Superó mis espectativas por mucho, tomando en consideración que el álbum fue autoproducido y grabado en un estudio en Puerto Rico luego de que la banda haya tenido la experiencia de grabar en un estudio de alto calibre. Tal vez por eso es que el LP “Para Nadie En Particular” suena algo más íntimo, pero con el mismo grado de buena producción que caracterizó la música de la banda desde el principio. Hace tiempo no escuchaba un álbum en español con una buena dosis de guitarras y rock, el último siendo “Ahí Vamos” de Gustavo Cerati. Y a pesar de que “Para Nadie En Particular” me recuerda mucho a Cerati, Radiohead y al Draco de “Vagabundo,” el álbum es una propuesta nueva dentro de las esferas musicales en español.

En fin, el álbum completo es bueno, pero si tuviese que escoger cuatro canciones favoritas, creo que esas serían “Aidaluz,” “Invisible Norte,” “Detrás de la Luz” y “La Muerte de Apolonia.”

Al igual que mi amiga hizo conmigo, les recomiendo que escuchen el álbum y a seguir regando la voz para apoyar a esta banda independiente que sin duda tiene suficiente potencial para entrar en un mercado internacional.

“Somos la única posibilidad que tiene el amor de conocerse a sí mismo.” Así cierra el archivo de ilustraciones que acompaña este disco/manual/viaje… o como lo quieras describir.

Julián Mayorga y su “Manual para moverse libremente bajo la lluvia“… hay tantas cosas por decir, pero nada me viene a la mente. Es que hay tantos detalles, en cada espacio, en cada silencio, en cada enigmática frase que suelta, que se me truncan las ideas.

Los sonidos nocturnos envuelven la esencia de este álbum y es en una noche solitaria cuando mejor se aprecia el trabajo más reciente de este artista nacido en una “ciudad vertical” colombiana. En estos 11 temas que salieron a la luz gratuitamente el 30 de octubre de 2011, Julián Mayorga me recuerda lejanamente y cercanamente a la vez (depende de los fragmentos de canciones que se te queden pegados) a los Flaming Lips o a Wilco, dos bandas norteamericanas monumentales que siempre logran llevarte en un viaje a través de sus canciones.

Es un Manual de canciones en donde todo apunta a una nostalgia triste y sola y lo que encuentras es una esperanza melódica. Con solo leer los títulos de cada canción, ya sabrás que tienes una aventura en tus manos, lista para ser escuchada en cualquier momento. Canciones como:

- Metal [Instrucciones para dormir al Gran rey sapo gigante que habita mi corazón y vaga sin descanso tras los rastros de azúcar]

o

- ¿Cómo llorar al revés o regresar al asfalto o espantar mi propio cuerpo inerte o desaparecer y volver a aparecer? [pensamientos sobre el petróleo como producto de la muerte de bellos seres ancestrales y su influencia en la ascensión y caída de la civilización occidental]

Su voz, a veces desafinada con encanto, se abraza con la batería que casi no existe y los sonidos muchas veces indescifrables. Este si es un disco que fue elaborado con mucho amor al arte y te deja ese sabor rico en la boca con cada rinconcito secreto que vayas descubriendo. Está hecho para momentos particulares y específicos y tu definirás esos momentos a medida que vayas apreciando el disco. Junto con sus ilustraciones, que a mi parecer, tienen una influencia muy grande de Shel Silverstein, este manual es muy útil en enseñarte a moverte libremente bajo la lluvia, en explicar lo inexplicable, en adelantar la salida del sol mientras la noche sigue joven. A mi siempre me gustaba hacer experimentos en las clases de química en la secundaria porque no sabía que esperar de ellos. Para mi sorpresa, sucedió lo mismo cuando escuché por primera vez la banda Xperimento de Miami. No me esperaba esa mezcla de Cumbia, Reggae, Merengue, Ska, Salsa, Funk y otros elementos que me dio ganas de pararme y moverme al son de ritmos multiculturales. El disco “Second Floor” es uno que comienza bien y termina bien. A través del álbum se pueden apreciar distintos ritmos en distintos idiomas, haciendo que ninguna canción se parezca a otra y haciéndolo muy entretenido, tanto para bailar como para sentarse a escuchar.

La banda que denomina su música como “Latin Reggae Urban Soul” comenzó hace más de dos años uniendo músicos de Argentina, Puerto Rico, Venezuela y Colombia para así formar una mezcla interesante de ritmos latinos que solamente se puede dar en Miami. “Second Floor” es el primer álbum de la banda, el cual ya está disponible a través de iTunes.

A pesar de que los experimentos a veces pueden salir mal, parece que Xperimento es uno que salió bien. Está científicamente probado que su música es perfecta para la gozadera de día y de noche.

Who is “in No one’s name“? Four guys from Mexico that love to create music and share it with us, while having a little bit of a crazy start on their musical journey. Formed in 2006, but having relocated since the release of the album in 2009 , none of the members live in the same city as of now. They have created a page on their website called “construction site” which allows a member of the band to put a recording up, then another member can record and add their part of the song and so on. They might even let fans add their own recordings if they are good enough!

The soft strains of música popular brasileira (MPB) are fine for making breakfast in the morning as I tune into MPB FM, nothing too harsh before my café com leite. On the flip side, the overwhelming bass of a baile funk is all bluster, no subtlety,
brash and exuberant and over the top, perfect for a bleary-eyed all nighter. But somewhere in the vast wellspring of Brazilian music there must be a middle ground – complex but not abrasive, sonorous but not soft. I found some version of that
platonic ideal on March 25. Nearby Lapa was in its usual Friday night full swing, and on the side street that is home to the Teatro Rival there was a baile black underway – a crowd of slightly older Afro-Brazilians grooving to the sounds of ’90s hip-hop and RnB (Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop” was on full blast when I arrived).

Slipping into the underground theater was a strange portal back to the kind of bobo
spots like World Café Live where I saw international music acts in Philadelphia.
Thankfully, the Brazilian crowd cut loose more than your average gringo audience
and thrashed around with joyful abandon as Orchestra Santa Massa reinterpreted
the traditional sounds of northeastern Brazil at their first show in seven years.
The artful mix of buoyant brass (trombone + trumpet), skillful violin, hauntingly beautiful male and female vocals that seemed to reach back centuries, and a judicious but not heavy-handed layer of samples and effects by ringleader (maestro?) DJ Dolores was indeed enough to renew my faith in Brazilian music.

DJ Dolores is a veteran of Recife’s manguebit movement, which in the late ’90s
began mixing the folk music of Pernambuco (the state of which Recife is the capital)
with rock instrumentation and electronic manipulation. Sometimes shoddy,
oftentimes revolutionary, manguebit has ebbed and flowed over the last decade.
But Dolores remains a mainstay of musical innovation, and has resurrected Santa
Massa at least for a tour, if not for another album. Equally adept as a DJ, he kept
the offbeat crowd – from a Bangalafumenga (a 50,000+ Carnival bloco) drummer
to a dedicated hula-hooper – on the dance floor well after curtain call, including
some nice cumbia cuts that I have yet to hear in Rio. Perhaps unconsciously, he was
rightly calling attention to yet another Latin American music with a storied tradition
that has been tweaked and tuned-up in the 21st century.

Hip-Hop’s worldwide demand has increased over the years with the help of social networks and media. Finding hip-hop lovers all over the world has helped other countries develop their own take on this urban movement. BOA is a record label based out of Spain that has been producing and promoting national hip-hop artists since 1993. They do everything from the recording and the mixing to the marketing and distribution of their artist’s music. Their fanbase is mainly from Spain and Latin America, and now they’re aiming for the states.

BOA also created the biggest annual Hip Hop festival in Spain, Cultura Urbana, with the participation of the label’s artists, DJ’s and breakers; where you can also admire Urban Art from some of the most talented artists from all over the world.

Some of the artists under this label are SFDK, Siempre Fuertes De Konciencia, formed by Zatu (MC) and Acción Sánchez (DJ). Barcelona rapper ZPU, whose video for “He tenido un sueño” was named one of the best videos of 2010 in Spain. Hip-hop band, Violadores del Verso, formed by Hate (Sho Hai, MC), Kase-O (Javat, MC), Lírico (MC), y R de Rumba (DJ and producer) who won best Spanish Artist at the MTV EMA’S in the year 2007.

In only a year, it has gained millions of views and is a favorite for many urban heads around the world. Also, don’t forget to visit the artist’s websites and be one of the first to form part of this breakthrough Urban movement from Spain!

Desde Puerto Rico, la Orquesta El Macabeo está compuesta por 13 rockeros que están poniendo la salsa al día. Si los ves en la calle nunca te imaginarías que tocan en una orquesta de salsa ya que no visten como salseros, e incluso algunos de ellos portan tatuajes. Es algo que no cae bajo ningún estereotipo tradicional y así mismo es la música que crean. Es salsa de la dura creada por punkos, por eso es que el sonido del Macabeo es tan diferente y refrescante. Llevan creando y tocando música desde el 2008, haciendo mover a los bailadores y contagiando al público con el sonido salsero lleno de impurezas provenientes de otros géneros, impurezas que crean algo puro y nuevo.

En diciembre de 2010 lanzaron su primera producción musical titulada “Salsa Macabra”. En el álbum se pueden escuchar canciones que son simplemente para vacilar, como “Charlatán” y “Macabiónico” y también canciones más serias, como “La Noche” y “La Culpa”. Es un álbum muy diverso y trascendental que promete complacer y poner a bailar a cualquier fanático de cualquier género musical.

El disco fue grabado en Monopolio Records y fue mezclado y masterizado por José Ibáñez, bajista de la orquesta.

We recently approached one of the collaborating DJs on our page, Juanderful Juan, to do an article on the Puertorican salsa artist Edwin Bonilla. Juanderful is one of the masterminds behind the Tropicalismo! parties and has been bringing Tropical Bass to Philly on a monthly basis, inviting artists like Uproot Andy, DJ Sabo and Maga Bo to heat up the dancefloor.

Last year, Edwin Bonilla, an international salsa superstar,  released his latest hit album “Homenaje A Los Rumberos” with SonicProjects Records. This album features powerful horns, strong percussion riffs, crisp and wide vocal arrangements and deep live “descargas”. “Homenaje A Los Rumberos” reached #16 on the Billboard Tropical Albums Chart and gained exceptional reviews on various worldwide salsa publications.

My brother and I have constantly challenged each other with different music and he recently asked me to take a listen to Edwin Bonilla’s latest effort.  “Homenaje a los Rumberos” is Edwin’s fourth solo album. Although my brother was one of the assistant engineers on this project, that wouldn’t stop me from telling him if I wasn’t into it.  I don’t know that I would consider myself a salsa expert but I do have a decent collection, so I wanted to take on the challenge.

I don’t know Edwin Bonilla personally but from the research that I’ve done he seems like a genuine, hard working person.  Actually almost every piece that came up on him mentioned something about him being one of the hardest working men in the biz. As I dug for more information flipping through one of my favorite magazines, Wax Poetics, to my surprise, in the October/November 2006 issue, I noticed there was this interview with him, “Salsa Dura Now! Edwin Bonilla works hard to move bodies.”  This gave me some great points of reference on Bonilla.

On my first listen to “Homenaje a los Rumberos” it took me back to one of my parent’s old school parties, it has the same good vibes feeling to it. From the first song, “La Melodia”, it throws you right on to the dance floor. In the Wax Poetics interview he mentions “I like to get people going from the beginning-I like to get to the point in my music. When you hear it, it’ll catch your ear and make you want to get up and dance.” With “La Melodia” it definitely does this and the vocals help with that. “Canto Abacua” is the next song that is another dance floor killer. Great keyboard action, around minute 2, that reminds me a bit of a space-agey Eddie Palmieri and then goes down into the breakdown.  Which is one thing I noticed on many of the songs, there are some great breakdowns! This one makes you feel like you’ve been thrown into the middle of a carnival. I love the vocals on “Timbalero Suena”, it just has some of that old school sound to it. Flows nicely throughout the entire song, with some nice scatting action which leads the breakdown with a little “rompelo ya Edwin Bonilla!” The title song “Homenaje a Los Rumberos” is beautifully composed and again has that old school feeling to it. Love the backup vocals on this one with some “voz de vieja” (the high pitched/nasal backup vocals) action. The last song, como cosa rara, tears up the dance floor again. “No Hay Quien Se Aguante”, with its song title, it kind of dares any dancer to keep up with the pace of this song.  Go ahead I dare you! When you start feeling like your legs are going to give way… don’t despair, the rhythm will be right there just in the nick of time to carry you. All in all, this album is well put together and if it doesn’t make you move in some way you should feel guilty.  “I have to beat the drum every day. Si tuviese que describir la música de La Santa Cecilia, diría que es el encuentro de elementos tradicionales latinoamericanos con detalles de rock, blues, jazz, reggae y por ahí sigue la lista… Ayer lanzaron un nuevo EP de cinco canciones llamado ‘Noche y Citas’. Esta es su segunda producción musical luego de lanzar un EP homónimo. Esta energética banda recoge influencias de diversos géneros musicales y los mezcla armoniosamente, creando música que no es de un género específico, nombrando entre sus mayores influencias a diversos artistas como Miles Davis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Mercedes Sosa y Ramón Ayala.

Algo que me gustó mucho del EP nuevo fue la presencia de un acordeón en todas las canciones y la forma en que combinan instrumentos mexicanos con otros instrumentos más afrocaribeños como los timbales y el güiro. Es interesante porque muestra un deseo de expansión y fusión cultural dentro de la música latina en Estados Unidos. La Santa Cecilia es una de esas bandas que trae nuevas y curiosas propuestas. En fin, el EP está buenísimo, todas las canciones son divertidas e interesantes, pero mi canción favorita es ‘Finita’, tiene algo hipnotizante, algo que me atrapa, y el sencillo ‘La Negra’ es perfecto para ponerse los zapatos de baile y mover el esqueleto. La Santa Cecilia fue creada en el 2007 en Los Ángeles, CA y le rinde homenaje con su nombre a la santa patrona de la música. Está compuesta por Gloria Estrada en guitarra, José Carlos en el acordeón y requinto, Alex Bendana en el bajo, Miguel Ramírez en la percusión, Hugo Vargas en la batería y Marisoul en la voz que nunca falla en dejar a su público cautivado.

Por ahí comentan que esta banda en vivo es toda una experiencia, así que si tienes la oportunidad de verlos tocar ¡no te los pierdas!
