We recently sat down with Mike Walker, Executive Vice President for the Miami Heat Group for an interview. The American Airlines Arena (AAA) has provided Latin artists a monumental arena to perform in while helping the Latin American community come together in Miami.

The AAA opened in 2000 and Mr. Walker arrived in 2001. He is in charge of booking all of the performances and shows at the arena. Over the last 11 years, the arena has had in excess of 100 Latin shows and Gloria Estefan came in as the first Latin performer of many the building would soon host. The arena has hosted the Latin Grammys and MTV Music Awards and out of all the shows held here annually; about 35%-45% of them are Latin.

The AAA was built to replace the Miami Arena, which held all the major concerts in Miami as well as the Florida Panthers (1993-1998), Miami Heat (1988-1999), and the University of Miami Basketball team (1988-2003). Here is our Q & A we with Mr. Walker.

Bitlove fue  creado hace más de 2 años, uniendo diversas plataformas en línea para ayudar a difundir el trabajo de artistas ligados a la música, cine, diseño y pintura. Actualmente andan apoyando más de una docena de artistas de diversos géneros musicales, impulsando la escena musical independiente de Chile.

Bitlove funciona como una plataforma de difusión para artistas emergentes, haciendo disponible para la venta sus discos físicos y descargables a través de su tienda en línea. The soft strains of música popular brasileira (MPB) are fine for making breakfast in the morning as I tune into MPB FM, nothing too harsh before my café com leite. On the flip side, the overwhelming bass of a baile funk is all bluster, no subtlety,
brash and exuberant and over the top, perfect for a bleary-eyed all nighter. But somewhere in the vast wellspring of Brazilian music there must be a middle ground – complex but not abrasive, sonorous but not soft. I found some version of that
platonic ideal on March 25. Nearby Lapa was in its usual Friday night full swing, and on the side street that is home to the Teatro Rival there was a baile black underway – a crowd of slightly older Afro-Brazilians grooving to the sounds of ’90s hip-hop and RnB (Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop” was on full blast when I arrived).

Slipping into the underground theater was a strange portal back to the kind of bobo
spots like World Café Live where I saw international music acts in Philadelphia.
Thankfully, the Brazilian crowd cut loose more than your average gringo audience
and thrashed around with joyful abandon as Orchestra Santa Massa reinterpreted
the traditional sounds of northeastern Brazil at their first show in seven years.
The artful mix of buoyant brass (trombone + trumpet), skillful violin, hauntingly beautiful male and female vocals that seemed to reach back centuries, and a judicious but not heavy-handed layer of samples and effects by ringleader (maestro?) DJ Dolores was indeed enough to renew my faith in Brazilian music.

DJ Dolores is a veteran of Recife’s manguebit movement, which in the late ’90s
began mixing the folk music of Pernambuco (the state of which Recife is the capital)
with rock instrumentation and electronic manipulation. Sometimes shoddy,
oftentimes revolutionary, manguebit has ebbed and flowed over the last decade.
But Dolores remains a mainstay of musical innovation, and has resurrected Santa
Massa at least for a tour, if not for another album. Equally adept as a DJ, he kept
the offbeat crowd – from a Bangalafumenga (a 50,000+ Carnival bloco) drummer
to a dedicated hula-hooper – on the dance floor well after curtain call, including
some nice cumbia cuts that I have yet to hear in Rio. Perhaps unconsciously, he was
rightly calling attention to yet another Latin American music with a storied tradition
that has been tweaked and tuned-up in the 21st century.

SXSW es un festival de nivel mundial que toma lugar en alrededor de 80 tarimas en Downtown Austin, TX cada marzo desde el 1987. Este año será celebrado del 11 al 20 de marzo y se espera la participación de cientos de artistas de todos los continentes (excepto Antártica, claro está).

SXSW está dividido en tres: Interactive, Film y Music.

• SXSW Interactive será llevado a cabo del 11 al 15 de marzo y se concentrará alrededor de presentaciones de las mentes más brillantes en el campo de la tecnología y negocios. Dato curioso: SXSW Interactive fue el que impulsó la popularidad de Twitter en sus inicios en el 2007, pasando de 20,000 tweets a 60,000 tweets al día durante el evento.
• SXSW Film se celebrará del 11 al 19 de marzo y se caracteriza por reunir audiencias talentosas con personas importantes de la industria de cine. Muchas películas escogen este evento para hacer su premier mundial, como lo fue la taquillera Kick-Ass el año pasado.
• SXSW Music se dirigirá a los adictos de la música en vivo del 15 al 20 de marzo.

año se vuelve más y más emocionante con el continuo crecimiento en el número de artistas latinos e hispanos que participan en dicho festival. En años pasados se han presentado reconocidos artistas como Jorge Drexler, Alex Cuba, Mala Rodríguez, Zoé, Ely Guerra, Choc Quib Town, Natalia Lafourcade y muchísimos otros. Este año se presentarán más de 100 artistas latinos y preparamos una lista de sus presentaciones para que los que asistan a SXSW sepan a donde ir y así nos puedan dejar saber en nuestro Facebook o Twitter sobre las novedades del festival.

La música no es solo un medio de entretenimiento, expresión, o consolación, también es una forma de llegar a los oídos de las personas e influenciar con un buen mensaje. Este es el caso con la Fundación JMI, quien en colaboración con Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network (GYAC) y el Instituto del Banco Mundial crearon un proyecto titulado Fair Play Anti-Corruption Youth Voices. Este proyecto es una competencia global de canciones originales de jóvenes grupos musicales (18-35 años) sobre la lucha contra la corrupción. La misión de Fair Play es  conectar artistas y ciudadanos  de todo el mundo para combatir y prevenir este mal social que afecta a todos.

Las personas interesadas en participar tendrán que subir sus vídeos musicales a YouTube y registrar su entrada en la página Web del concurso.Las tres mejores bandas seleccionadas por el jurado de Fair Play, ganaran un viaje a Kenia para participar y tocar en vivo en el Segundo Foro Global Anti-corrupción que se realizará en Nairobi.  La banda que reciba el mayor número de votos por su vídeo online conseguirá una sesión en un estudio por el valor de $2,000.

Last Friday, February 18, we caught up with Tropical Bass specialists Geko Jones and Uproot Andy, the DJ duo together known as Que Bajo?! They left the snowy winter going on in NY and came down to tropical and sunny Miami to spin one of their “sabrosón” sets at Transit Lounge, a night presented by Jack Daniel’s Studio No. 7. We are less than a month away from Brazil’s Carnaval spectacular, and tragically a fire struck the Cidade do Samba in Rio de Janeiro last week, destroying months’ worth of careful craftsmanship on floats and costumes, valued at almost $6 million.  Amazingly, the show must go on, and somehow the three schools most affected will pull something together in 29 days so they can parade in the Sambódromo come early March.

That, as they say, is the Carnival spirit, which Tropicalismo will be channeling on Thursday, February 17 at Walnut Room.  For six months, the Tropicalismo DJs have been connecting the musical dots of the Americas, much of it inspired by the annual festivities that fill the streets from Brazil to Bogotá to Barbados, from Panama to Puerto Rico to Port-of-Spain.  Carnival is truly a pan-American celebration, and especially when winter is giving way to spring, Philadelphia is joining in, remember it will be some of the best weather the northeast has seen since who knows when on Thursday.

To bring it all together, Tropicalismo residents Gregzinho (Braziladelphia – and back briefly from Rio just for the party!) and Juanderful (Mundial) will be spinning their favorite Carnival jams.  Alongside will be the bombastic Brazilian-style bateria of Alex Shaw (Alô Brasil) and Eduardo Santos, whose seductive samba drumming will echo off the walls of Walnut Room, and an Alô Brasil dancer in full Brazilian Carnaval regalia, bringing the glitz and glamor of Rio’s Carnival to February in Philly. Also to add to the festivities will be Ron Wood, member of ASCAB capoeira, and a couple of his capoeiristas to show you the art of the danced fight. Finally, world-touring, in-demand Montreal DJ Poirier (Ninjatune) will send the crowd into a Carnival bacchanal hysteria, Caribbean-style, as his energetic set draws from bits and pieces of dancehall and soca mashed up with bass-heavy, low-end shaking beats.  It’s not for nothing that his hometown party, Karnival, is a regular sell-out.
