Rey Fresco is a four piece band from Ventura, California comprised of musicians from different backgrounds: soulful lead singer and Fiji native, Roger Keiaho, drummer, Andrew Jones, who builds his own drums with techniques borrowed from surfboard making, bassist, Shawn Echevarria and harpist, Xocoyotzin “Xoco” Moraza, who plays a 36 string Veracruz harp built by his father.
The band was formed when the four of them got together to jam, giving birth to a new sound, blending each members musical and cultural influences. It is something that happens in every band, but in Rey Fresco’s case, these influences came from extremely different musical styles and backgrounds. Rey Fresco is a fusion of world, soul, Latin, reggae, R&B, rock, and many other music genres you would not expect from a band, mainly because of the signature harp sound from Xoco Moraza. As drummer Andrew Jones explains: “Who plays the harp, not necessarily in a rock band, but… who plays the harp anywhere around here?”
They have been playing sold out shows all around, including four performances in three days at SXSW this year and sold out shows at the 1,200 plus Ventura Theater, where they will be playing again on Saturday, May 21st. Their first sold out show at the Ventura Theater caught the attention of the music industry, leading to a deal with Eight O Five Records, label distributed by Fontana/Universal. They released their debut album “The People” digitally in the fall of 2009, which captures the energy of the band’s live show, but also highlights the quality of the band’s songwriting.
The band has just released a deluxe album today through Eight O Five/Universal Music Group called “More People”, which includes their 2009 album “The People” plus 5 new “Fresco-ized” versions of popular songs like, Steve Miller’s “The Joker”, Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” and, a surprisingly passionate rendition of the Biz Markie hip hop classic, “Just A Friend”. It also features “El Pajaro Cu”, a captivating instrumental featured in the commercial for the 2011 Ford Explorer.
Here we have a free download of the song “All in Awe” from the album “The People”, which is also contained in “More People” (you can see the video of the song here: http://bit.ly/7x3vVl)… and be sure to check them out in all their websites!
